Do You Want to Make it Habit Forming?

Happy New Year!  Have you had your time to reminisce about 2011 and all that you have accomplished (or not)?  Have you had enough planning for what you want to do in 2012?

Many businesses used the end of the year to finish projects, get organized, review lessons learned, and plan for the New Year.  Planning, organization, and reviewing data are all important but now it is time to do!  After all, it is often the start of the fiscal year and that means quarter one.  Let’s get on the ball and be realistic about what you really need to be doing (or not).

Besides working on your annual project goals, you might have some habits you want to change this year.

Perhaps you want to do better at keeping down that paper pile

I am at the bottom of the paper pile!

or following up on calls.

Forget about follow up. It is so much easier to pick up the phone when it rings.

Before you consider seriously starting a new habit, put some thought into what you need to do to break the old habit that coincides with the new one you want to start.  Think positive!  Can you spend an hour a day going through your pile and determining what needs to be done with each paper?  Or perhaps it is less time at the water cooler getting the office social news and more time on the phone with those follow up calls?  That’s great and it might get you through the first week or two.

Yeah, I’m working on it.

Seriously, you have to be practical and realistic.  You know yourself better than anyone.  What else can you do to continually make the habit you want to start more habit forming?

I recently read something from Stephen Covey that said, to make something habit forming you need 3 things: Knowledge (know what to do), Skill (know how to do it), and Desire (want to do it).

1 – What to do, recognition is power.  If I know I am wasting too much time at the water cooler to begin with, that is the first step to prioritizing things better.

2 – How to do it, my instructions to follow.  What time management skills can I be using or how can I change my gossip habits?

3 – Want to do it, no one can tell you what to do, you must make the decision for yourself to be successful.   Winfred Peterson says “Decision is the spark that ignites action.  Until a decision is made, nothing happens.”

Not quite sure how to do it. Not quite sure I want to do it. What is it I was supposed to do?

Knowledge, skill and desire.  With only 2 of these, you won’t succeed.  For example, if you know that you want to quit checking your Facebook every other minute and you have a technique that works, you still must have the personal desire to “Just Do It!”  And just the same, if you want to start walking during your lunch break, and know you need to exercise more for a healthier lifestyle, you must have more than a plan to take the stairs instead of the elevation.  What else do you know to create a long-term healthy lifestyle?  With recognition, know-how, and the decision to do it, you are on your way to making a positive life change.

Do you have any other tips to share that will help us all achieve our goals this year?  Or perhaps you want to share what you plan.  Sharing your goals and writing them down are great ways to increase your commitment to do them.
